I love Birth art. I think it’s a tremendous way to memorialize such an important and transformative time of life!

When I visited Eugenia Algaze Garcia’s site called Mindful Art , I felt like I did once when I visited an old “out-of-the-way” barn filled with dusty items for sale. The space itself may not be impressive, but you could just TELL there were treasures to be found!

Her Birth Art Section contains a wide variety of art styles-something for everyone! “Birth Waves” reminds me of the rhythm of labor, and “A Brother’s Love” captures both the form and the emotion of this lovely moment.

Eugenia really found her niche though, with her paintings like: “Protect and Defend”, “C-section”, and “Positive or Negative”. Her use of the trees as human objects is at once thought-provoking and enthralling.

This artist also makes use of a difficult and unusual skill-she actually paints hidden images into some of her paintings, which I find really intriguing!

My only criticism is not about her art, but about one of the website components: These paintings are so lovely, I wish there was a more direct way to click on the sample images to be able to see better detail! I feel that much of the communication and artistic detail is hindered by the small size of the images. I did however,  find this gallery page, where you can see some of the paintings slightly bigger if you click on them.

I am an art lover, and particularly fond of art that is not “static”. I like art to tell a story-share a viewpoint-or encourage a new way of thinking or feeling in the observer. I love Eugenia’s art for this reason, and I aspire to have one of these lovely “tree-people” paintings in my work area!

If you are in Houston Texas, (which I am sadly not) be sure to visit Eugenia at the Birth Fair  October 4, 2008 (Saturday 11-4). It’s at the United Way building at 50 Waugh Drive, just north of Memorial Drive, in Houston. And don’t forget to visit her events page to see other places her unique art will be shown!
